We had the good fortune of connecting with Clarke Holmes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Clarke, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had just turned 40 years of age in 2012. I had a “now or never” type of moment. I had been in Nashville for nearly 3 years and had built a great practice of patients as an employee of another practice where the owner was retiring. My wife has an entrepreneurial spirit and encouraged me to take the steps to be a small business owner where I could practice medicine in a manner that would be the most impactful to my patients.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Impact Sports Medicine and Orthopedics is a medical practice based on the care of musculoskeletal conditions in athletes and non-athletes of all ages. We focus on minimally-invasive and nonsurgical techniques to treat these conditions.

What sets us apart is that each patient is treated as a person, not a body part or condition. I focus on being a great diagnostician, educating the patient on his/her condition, and then empowering the patient to jointly create a customized treatment plan. We offer both traditional, holistic and cutting-edge treatment options.

Building a private practice is about relationships: relationships with other physicians and medical professionals, word-of-mouth referrals and then doing a great job with each patient, so that the message spreads about your compassionate and competent care of patients.

Building a private practice is never easy. Nothing worthwhile is, right? One big challenge is that your day is not over when you see your last patient. There are typically still hours of additional work required related to the clinical and administrative aspects of the practice. Also, you are not just a physician. You handle human resources, pay bills, review accounts, order supplies, develop marketing strategies and are continually building your brand.

My brand is built on the tag line for my practice: Expertise. Innovation. Compassion.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would cover all the bases here in Nashville: sports, music, exercise, culinary and historical. Depending on the season, I would hit a Nashville Soccer Club match, a Predators game or the SEC basketball tournament. Music would include a concert at the Ryman or Ascend Amphitheater. Exercise would include a hike in one of the Warner Parks or a downtown walking tour. Our food and beverage experience would include one of the unique restaurants in Germantown, my favorite local “watering hole” of Sam’s Place and then perhaps a local brewery or distillery. Our history tour would likely include the Carnton Plantation and Carter House.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Christie and my parents, Clarke and Mary Jo, all have showered me with love, support and encouragement in ways that have allowed me to thrive in the world of medicine and private practice.
