We had the good fortune of connecting with Homespun Haints Becky Kilimnik and Diana Doty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Homespun Haints, is there something you believe many others might not?
One piece of conventional advice that we disagree with is the idea of offering discounts to obtain new clients. We’ve experimented with this technique in businesses as varied as fine art to healthcare, as well as following the well-meaning advice of so-called marketing experts. In reality, what invariably happens is disappointing. The type of clients attracted to this marketing tactic lack brand loyalty, and are specifically seeking to gain more in value than they pay out. They’re generally difficult to please, and quick to leave negative reviews. We also feel like discounting for new clients is disloyal to our current clients; to offer new ones a deal that our loyal clients don’t have access to.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’ve always approached our art from a business mindset, despite being natural creatives. One way to overcome artistic blocks and streamline the artistic process is to apply a business structure to art creation: set up measurable goals, break them into smaller pieces, and stick to a schedule. Don’t wait for inspiration; inspiration is something you create before you can create anything else. For regularity, stick to a practice or methodology when working through a creative plan, and train your brain to follow a certain set of prescribed steps to summon your muse on-demand.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our favorite places in Nashville are Rudy’s Jazz Room and The Listening Room Cafe. We crave the moody, dark, intimate atmosphere, and we value the spotlight they provide for independent performers before they become famous. As bootstrapping artists ourselves, we love seeing a popular venue support new artists. But during daylight hours, we can’t find a better place to haunt than Nashville City Cemetery.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We owe our incredible website traffic to Stephanie Long of MrsSEO.co, a fellow macabre humor enthusiast and digital professional. Also an entrepreneur, Stephanie has formed an incredible company. Her mentorship and services have been indispensable for new listeners finding our podcast online. Homespun Haints shows up on the first page of many Google searches, even as a small indie podcast. Plus, we just love working with her.
