We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaori Nik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaori, what do you attribute your success to?
Building a solid team is the most important factor on the road to success. Along my journey I’ve had the privilege to work with some incredible artists. My graphic designer, Jae Gilyard, has been with me for more than 12 years. Photographers, accountants, writers, all high value relationships when building a business. These are major players on my team that I’ve not only done good business with but we have a beautiful creative bond. That a safety and comfortability is unmatched.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’ve worn many hats through the years but my foundation will always be hair care and makeup artistry. Starting in Chicago I graduated from cosmetology school and immediately started working fashion shows and commercials. Once I discovered special effects makeup I decided to move to LA to explore more opportunities in TV and film. Along the way I’ve made some beautiful connections and service some of the world most talented women. I started a magazine in 2019 centered around vegan lifestyle and support for black owned businesses called Afro-Vegan Beauty. The magazine required a lot of my time and attention making time management my biggest challenge. Transitioning into a wellness media brand helped me manage this more efficiently while still serving my audience with quality information. 2023 I took on the roll of artistic director for a luxury cold press juice brand called MoreLife Liquid. Having a clear and updated schedule helps me stay on track with all my obligations. This allows me to show up at my fullest and also set time aside to recharge. Wellness is at the core of my brand so I always encourage others to find the harmony in all that you do to maintain your mental health.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA isn’t short on new things to do and I love it here for that! Being outside in the sun is a big part of moving here from the midwest. Food truck meet ups, art exhibitions, museums, and botanical gardens are some of my favorite places to explore in the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d shout out my creative partner, Jae Gilyard. I owe my success to an amazing network of creatives.
